More Books & Tunes

I have to admit that I have been reading A LOT. It's kind of great because it makes up for not reading during the busy school year, so heres some more books:

( Keep in mind that I read very light, easy reads during the summer)

Gorgeous by Paul Rudnick

Holy, I did not expect a lot from this book but it was really funny! I was laughing the entire time I was reading this book. My mom actually read it before me and told me it was great, so I continued where I left off. It is a bit slow, but trust me you won't regret reading it!

Recovery Road by Blake Nelson

This book, completely and utterly destroyed my emotions. This book was so real in a way, and really delt with love and romance in a way that you would expect characters to deal with it. You really feel this characters pain, and through her time in rehab you see her progression as a character. By the end of this book, I threw it across the room out of anger and frustration and sadness. For people that liked Silver Linings Playbook, and Its Kind Of A Funny Story, this is for you!

Music:

Your ex lover is dead- stars

If you read about my tragic encounter with The Summer I Turned Pretty series, theres more. I found a playlist of songs online that the author had to show the emotions of the story, and the songs she listened to while writing it. Let me tell you, this song is so powerful in so many ways. I love the group Stars, and somehow never heard of this song, and now it might be one of my favourites.

Burning Bridges- Onerepublic

Everyone always thinks i'm confusing onerepublic with one direction. NO. They are two separate bands! I have recently fallen in love with their new CD, Native and this is one of my favourite songs.

Atlas Hands- Benjamin Francis Leftwich

This song, I have loved since the beginning of the summer and its just a really simple, relaxing song. I demand you to youtube this song now!

My Life In Black and White

If you lost the one thing that defined you, who would you be?

This is the simple premise of the book "My Life in black and white" by Natasha Friend. This book was a surprisingly easy and fast read for me, and had great heart.

This book is about a girl named Lexi, and looks are her defining feature. Everyone tells her she is pretty and she knows it. After a tragic car accident- which sends her going through a windshield her face gets torn apart and she looks nothing like she used to. She learns to cope with this, while trying to deal with what happened that night.

I liked this book a lot. It was one of those books with every aspect in it, with love, friendship, family and all these things were treated equally with each other. This book also talks about finding yourself and staying true to those around you.

I really liked the characters in this book, they were all very realistic characters that everyone could relate to. This situation was really realistic and so was Lexi's reaction to it. This book was just very real.

All in all, I think that this is not just a summer read but an all year read. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a moderate read, wants to learn something and wants a book that they won't be able to put down.

The Summer I Turned Pretty- Series Review ( By Jenny Han)

To start my summer I took out about 17 books from my library, and the book The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han was one of the first ones that I picked up to start my cottage reading. This book, my oh my was not what I expected it to be. Usually, for cottage reading I try to pick up easy reads; fluffy, simple plotted books, and judging by the name The Summer I Turned Pretty I was not expecting much from this book. I mean, thats not really a name for a book that crushes your heart.

Nevertheless, I couldn't put this book down. I devoured this book. It was like nothing i've ever read, and I finished- yes the entire trilogy of these books in less than 24 hours- yes friends, i'm obsessed.

This is one of the books that you have to read for yourself to find out how emotional it is. This book centres around a girl- Belly, who goes to the same beach house, every summer for her entire life. She goes with her mom and her brother, Steven. They go to this beach house with her moms best friend, and her two sons Conrad and Jeremiah Fisher. Belly, has grown up with these boys and has loved Conrad for as long as she can remember, but Conrad is two years older than her so he treated her like a child. This summer, is the summer where Belly has finally acquired enough confidence to go after Conrad, and hope that he sees her that way. This book doesn't stop just there- We are forced not just into a love triangle- but a love square???

I found the first book, enticing and couldn't put it down and the same with the other two books. I've even forced my mom to read them. I am by NO MEANS, a hopeless romantic and I enjoyed these books. It is not only about Belly's relationship with the boys, but the book goes through friendships and family just as much. Lastly, don't think you're weird if you fall in love with at least one of the Fisher boys after reading these books- you're not the only one.

Waiting Book Review (Book by Carol Lynch Williams)

so summer is officially here for me and I am going to be reading a lot so this is gonna be one of many book reviews. The book I just finished reading is called waiting and its basically about a girl recovering from the death of her brother ( I don't want to reveal too much) but basically she gets torn between two guys.

Don't be fooled though, it's not your typical love triangle.

This book was so well written, when I was reading it, London's pain became mine and I actually had to take frequent breaks because I became so sad reading it and feeling her pain and her loss. Part of the book was actually written in freeverse poems, which I found really cool because those as well really showed off London's emotions.

The characters had so much development throughout the novel, especially London who's inner thoughts were heard the entire time. You can really see how she craves her mothers attention.

I literally read this book in less than 24 hours, and my mom read the entire thing just this morning! I'm going to check out the other books by this author because her writing style is fantastic! I recommend this book to anyone looking for a good read!

Long time no see

I haven't posted in sooooo long! I've had such a busy few months, after my leg injury I've been filming, editing and working hard on end of the year summatives . I have seen several movies, the place beyond the pines, iron man 3 and the great gastby all which I think we're really good! The place beyond the pines was action packed, extreamly dramatic and it carried well throughout the three acts. Iron man 3 was one of my favourite iron mans, it was funny and had a whole different style to it than the other iron mans. Lastly I enjoyed the great gastby, I sadly didn't read the book or watch the other version so I have nothing to compare it to, despite the fact that Leo loves films related to water haha. Anyway, that was my quick update. Be sure to check out my YouTube channel for videos and stuff! Thanks a ton!

oh and if you saw the film voiceless, it is featured in this review

Oz the great and the powerful

Oz the great and the powerful is a prequel to the fantastic wizard of oz movie, it was very anticipated and has some major stars in it playing witches and wizards and even dolls!

This film was enjoyable, but not over the top enjoyable. The acting was okay, I think that a lot of the actresses or actors could have done better in their performances, but the film was still entertaining and an interesting interoperation of oz. Another thing was I felt as through when it ended, it didn't really end, I felt as though there was not much of an conclusion. Lastly, with all the wonderful special effects I felt as though the magic of oz in the earlier films was taken away, it almost felt like an animation film with people in it. Overall I would recommend it, but it was not the best. B

Dreaming A Nightmare

Hey this is a short film I worked on in my screen arts class with my friend Pegah, we both wrote the script, directed it and did the cinematography. We started writing this film in December and we published it about a month ago on youtube. It would mean a lot if you looked at it!

Thank you!

Must read books for people like me!

I am a type of reader that gets bored easily, I can't stand books that use long descriptions and such so my taste in books is different than a lot of peoples. Here are some of my favourite novels:

This book puts forth great lessons about life in general and the ending put me in tears. I think it is a good insight on what teens experience throughout their lives. Its also written in letter form , which keeps me reading it.

Some advice: Read the book before you watch the movie. I watched the movie first and it totally ruined it. Actually don't watch the movie at all, the movie did a poor job at keeping the meaning of the novel in my opinion.

I went through this book in two days. That says a lot about me because I am a very slow reader. I enjoyed every aspect about this book and its setting in an arts school.

I was so impressed by this book, its not a typical teen novel and thats what makes it amazing! Again, I read it in two days!

Jack the giant slayer review

Jack The Giant Slayer could've been a very bad movie. With this whole fairy tale trend going on in film, fairy tale movies attract all audiences: kids, teens and adults. Surprisingly, Jack The Giant Slayer packs a fresh twist on a fairy tale.

Jack The Giant Slayer tells the story of a boy named Jack who lives in a kingdom. One day he runs into a princess looking for an adventure and a beanstalk grows and takes her away. He must travel up the beanstalk with the kings knights and find the princess.

I think the part of the film that really drew it together was the story of the giants. The story of the giants was told at the beginning, which made the film really easy to understand. It also showed the story being told through two households, Jacks and the princesses. So at a young age, their lives were contrasted and compared to prove that they were not that different.

I also thought the acting was really good. I've never seen Nicholas Hoult in this sort of role before but he pulled it off very well and so did Eleanor Tomlinson, who played the princess. I look forwards to seeing her in future films.

Overall I would actually recommend this movie to any age groups, there is violence but its there to tell the story. Even though I didn't see this movie in 3D, I would recommend for it to be in 3D because I felt that it was meant to be shown in 3D by their utilizing of camera angles. B+

Warm Bodies Review

I was so excited to see Warm Bodies. I read the book and won this really awesome prize pack, and was obsessed with the story. When I finally saw it, I was pretty impressed.

Warm Bodies is short and sweet. It is a love story, but it is so much more than that. It is about a zombie named R who walked around in a airport wearing the same jeans and hoodie everyday (in the book he wears a bright red tie). He is one of the only zombies that has a very good ability- thinking. The whole story is told from his pov. R falls in love with a human, and vows to protect her and they both realize that love is curing him in some way and making him more human.

I think the concept is amazing for this movie, of how zombies can be cured by love. I also thought this movie was hilarious, even though it went with the whole "end of the world theme".

The acting was very well done considering I just found out that Nicholas Hoult (R) is british. So basically he has to fake an a mercian-zombie accent and did it flawlessly. Also he conveyed so many "Zombie emotions" very well. Teresa Palmer also did a very good job portraying Julie (she had an accent as well). One of the best acting jobs was the actress who played Nora,Analeigh Tipton. The way her personality was described in the book totally suited her character, and the actress pulled it off well.

If you are saying to yourself " this is just another twilight wannabe movie" you are deadly wrong. This movie may cover the supernatural aspect of twilight, and the zombie may be pale but you are nothing close. If this movie would be compared to anything it would be romeo and juliet (get it? R and Julie). Some of the Romeo and Juliet scenes were mimicked in this movie, but otherwise the concept was very original.

Overall, I did enjoy the book more than the movie, but I was still impressed with the movie and would recommend it to anyone. B+

Beautiful Creatures

Beautiful Creatures is a movie exploring the true meaning of what being a human is. It covers the story of a young girl, Lana Ducain who moves into an old small neighbourhood led by strict rules and guidelines. She forms a bond with a boy and they fall in love. She reveals to him that she is a "Caster" and will get chosen for the light or the dark on her 16th birthday.

This movie was a decent movie, I mean I couldn't finish the book, but the movie was alright. I found that the plot was very unconnected. There were several different parts of the story that I felt didn't seem to connect with the others.

The acting was good, even though I didn't picture the actor to play Ethan that ended up playing him. But he proved me wrong and did a good job playing him. All the other actors did a good job.

In conclusion, this movie was good, but not very good. It was ok. I have nothing bad to say about this movie but nothing extremely good to say about it either. C-

Compliance- A terrifying look at how we will obey.

Compliance is not for the faint of heart. Compliance is a film that appeared at Sundance last year and is based on true events. This movie covers the story of a fast food joint, that gets a call from someone claiming to be a police. This police tricks the employees into doing terrible things, and accusing a innocent girl of stealing and giving her consequences.

I think one of the most terrifying things about this movie is how real it is. This happened before and its scary how we can relate a bit to what they are going through. These people are complying to the orders of the so called police officer because the police officer assures them that what they are doing is right. So basically their instincts disappear.

I think the camera work for this movie was very well done and really captured the mood of the film through colours. All the actors and actresses in this film played their roles very well in conveying the feelings of being in this actual situation.

Overall, I wouldn't watch this movie again because of how disturbing this is, but as they say if a movie makes you think differently by the time you finish it, it is a good movie. And boy did this movie make me think differently. A-

Gangster Squad- Short Review!

Gangster Squad is the long awaited star studded movie based on real events. I was looking forwards to see this movie because of the high awaited praise for it.

This is about police officers who band together to get rid of the mob king, Mickey Cohen who runs the city.

This movie created a good idea for the time that they were in. I enjoyed the music, and how it really captured when this happened. I also enjoyed the story and how it was very real, but at the same time, fun to follow.

Overall I did enjoy this movie, but I think that it would appeal a lot more to a different type of audience other than myself. I thought it was very well rounded and would recommend it! B

Life of pi

Life of pi is a film about a boy who gets stranded on a lifeboat with a tiger. But life of pi isen't only about that, its about friendship, family, love and hope.

Life of Pi was visually amazing. There were some scenes, well almost all the scenes in this movie were stunning. They were also so realistic. The special effects were mind-blowing! Did you know the tiger was CGI??????? It was so real!!!

I know this is going to be short, but this movie was really, really good. I think that when the oscars come along, this is going to be a strong nominee! !! A-
