Oz the great and the powerful

Oz the great and the powerful is a prequel to the fantastic wizard of oz movie, it was very anticipated and has some major stars in it playing witches and wizards and even dolls!

This film was enjoyable, but not over the top enjoyable. The acting was okay, I think that a lot of the actresses or actors could have done better in their performances, but the film was still entertaining and an interesting interoperation of oz. Another thing was I felt as through when it ended, it didn't really end, I felt as though there was not much of an conclusion. Lastly, with all the wonderful special effects I felt as though the magic of oz in the earlier films was taken away, it almost felt like an animation film with people in it. Overall I would recommend it, but it was not the best. B

Dreaming A Nightmare

Hey this is a short film I worked on in my screen arts class with my friend Pegah, we both wrote the script, directed it and did the cinematography. We started writing this film in December and we published it about a month ago on youtube. It would mean a lot if you looked at it!

Thank you!

Must read books for people like me!

I am a type of reader that gets bored easily, I can't stand books that use long descriptions and such so my taste in books is different than a lot of peoples. Here are some of my favourite novels:

This book puts forth great lessons about life in general and the ending put me in tears. I think it is a good insight on what teens experience throughout their lives. Its also written in letter form , which keeps me reading it.

Some advice: Read the book before you watch the movie. I watched the movie first and it totally ruined it. Actually don't watch the movie at all, the movie did a poor job at keeping the meaning of the novel in my opinion.

I went through this book in two days. That says a lot about me because I am a very slow reader. I enjoyed every aspect about this book and its setting in an arts school.

I was so impressed by this book, its not a typical teen novel and thats what makes it amazing! Again, I read it in two days!

Jack the giant slayer review

Jack The Giant Slayer could've been a very bad movie. With this whole fairy tale trend going on in film, fairy tale movies attract all audiences: kids, teens and adults. Surprisingly, Jack The Giant Slayer packs a fresh twist on a fairy tale.

Jack The Giant Slayer tells the story of a boy named Jack who lives in a kingdom. One day he runs into a princess looking for an adventure and a beanstalk grows and takes her away. He must travel up the beanstalk with the kings knights and find the princess.

I think the part of the film that really drew it together was the story of the giants. The story of the giants was told at the beginning, which made the film really easy to understand. It also showed the story being told through two households, Jacks and the princesses. So at a young age, their lives were contrasted and compared to prove that they were not that different.

I also thought the acting was really good. I've never seen Nicholas Hoult in this sort of role before but he pulled it off very well and so did Eleanor Tomlinson, who played the princess. I look forwards to seeing her in future films.

Overall I would actually recommend this movie to any age groups, there is violence but its there to tell the story. Even though I didn't see this movie in 3D, I would recommend for it to be in 3D because I felt that it was meant to be shown in 3D by their utilizing of camera angles. B+

Warm Bodies Review

I was so excited to see Warm Bodies. I read the book and won this really awesome prize pack, and was obsessed with the story. When I finally saw it, I was pretty impressed.

Warm Bodies is short and sweet. It is a love story, but it is so much more than that. It is about a zombie named R who walked around in a airport wearing the same jeans and hoodie everyday (in the book he wears a bright red tie). He is one of the only zombies that has a very good ability- thinking. The whole story is told from his pov. R falls in love with a human, and vows to protect her and they both realize that love is curing him in some way and making him more human.

I think the concept is amazing for this movie, of how zombies can be cured by love. I also thought this movie was hilarious, even though it went with the whole "end of the world theme".

The acting was very well done considering I just found out that Nicholas Hoult (R) is british. So basically he has to fake an a mercian-zombie accent and did it flawlessly. Also he conveyed so many "Zombie emotions" very well. Teresa Palmer also did a very good job portraying Julie (she had an accent as well). One of the best acting jobs was the actress who played Nora,Analeigh Tipton. The way her personality was described in the book totally suited her character, and the actress pulled it off well.

If you are saying to yourself " this is just another twilight wannabe movie" you are deadly wrong. This movie may cover the supernatural aspect of twilight, and the zombie may be pale but you are nothing close. If this movie would be compared to anything it would be romeo and juliet (get it? R and Julie). Some of the Romeo and Juliet scenes were mimicked in this movie, but otherwise the concept was very original.

Overall, I did enjoy the book more than the movie, but I was still impressed with the movie and would recommend it to anyone. B+

Beautiful Creatures

Beautiful Creatures is a movie exploring the true meaning of what being a human is. It covers the story of a young girl, Lana Ducain who moves into an old small neighbourhood led by strict rules and guidelines. She forms a bond with a boy and they fall in love. She reveals to him that she is a "Caster" and will get chosen for the light or the dark on her 16th birthday.

This movie was a decent movie, I mean I couldn't finish the book, but the movie was alright. I found that the plot was very unconnected. There were several different parts of the story that I felt didn't seem to connect with the others.

The acting was good, even though I didn't picture the actor to play Ethan that ended up playing him. But he proved me wrong and did a good job playing him. All the other actors did a good job.

In conclusion, this movie was good, but not very good. It was ok. I have nothing bad to say about this movie but nothing extremely good to say about it either. C-

Compliance- A terrifying look at how we will obey.

Compliance is not for the faint of heart. Compliance is a film that appeared at Sundance last year and is based on true events. This movie covers the story of a fast food joint, that gets a call from someone claiming to be a police. This police tricks the employees into doing terrible things, and accusing a innocent girl of stealing and giving her consequences.

I think one of the most terrifying things about this movie is how real it is. This happened before and its scary how we can relate a bit to what they are going through. These people are complying to the orders of the so called police officer because the police officer assures them that what they are doing is right. So basically their instincts disappear.

I think the camera work for this movie was very well done and really captured the mood of the film through colours. All the actors and actresses in this film played their roles very well in conveying the feelings of being in this actual situation.

Overall, I wouldn't watch this movie again because of how disturbing this is, but as they say if a movie makes you think differently by the time you finish it, it is a good movie. And boy did this movie make me think differently. A-

Gangster Squad- Short Review!

Gangster Squad is the long awaited star studded movie based on real events. I was looking forwards to see this movie because of the high awaited praise for it.

This is about police officers who band together to get rid of the mob king, Mickey Cohen who runs the city.

This movie created a good idea for the time that they were in. I enjoyed the music, and how it really captured when this happened. I also enjoyed the story and how it was very real, but at the same time, fun to follow.

Overall I did enjoy this movie, but I think that it would appeal a lot more to a different type of audience other than myself. I thought it was very well rounded and would recommend it! B

Life of pi

Life of pi is a film about a boy who gets stranded on a lifeboat with a tiger. But life of pi isen't only about that, its about friendship, family, love and hope.

Life of Pi was visually amazing. There were some scenes, well almost all the scenes in this movie were stunning. They were also so realistic. The special effects were mind-blowing! Did you know the tiger was CGI??????? It was so real!!!

I know this is going to be short, but this movie was really, really good. I think that when the oscars come along, this is going to be a strong nominee! !! A-

Silver Linings Playbook

I remember wanting to see this movie so bad when it came out at TIFF, but the tickets sold out so fast. When it came out, I was so excited to see it and finally I saw it!

Silver Linings Playbook is a story of 2 adults who are recovering from a mental illness, and they find eachother and develop a strong friendship. These are played by Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence.

Silver Linings is flawless in every possible way. The story shows the true meaning of friendship and teaches you that you can't recover on your own. It also has themes of letting go, and being yourself.

The acting, I wouldn't be surprised if they both got nominated for oscars. Both of their performances in this movie were jaw dropping amazing. They totally went way beyond my expectations for their acting and emotions in the movie.

I love how the cinematography was meant to be from the point of view from Bradley Cooper's character and uses many different angles to convey what he was seeing and things from his perspective.

In conclusion, this movie is one of the best movies i've seen all year, I wouldn't be surprised if it got nominated for the oscars. Flawless. A

Grade 8 (Evolution)

I wrote this more than a year ago. I figured I would share it. Its really old and I thought you people might find it interesting to read. Please comment your constructive criticism !

Evolution
By Kassy Gascho

They had nothing to do but watch, watch as the fire tore down their world. This was the only thing that they knew and loved. The once green grass had fire spreading and burning on it. The trees were slowly shriveling up. This was their home, the beauty of the sunsets and sunrises was gone. Lauren’s eyes glistened with tears as she watched, her palms dripping with sweat. She couldn’t believe what was happening.

There was a large group of people standing behind her while she watched. Among the group there was a tall boy, with messy brown hair. He was terrified, dripping in sweat. Trying to calm himself, he breathed in, then out. Thinking to himself that it was going to get better. That was not the truth, it was actually as far away from the truth as possible.

These people that set fire to their land were called the insanes. They all of a sudden came to the earth, starting with 2, then tripling every day. There become almost as much as human kind. Then they began killing. They looked fairly like human, except for their gross features. They were terrible beings, hurting innocent people and making them do terrible things. Humankind didn’t know what to do about it. They began living in survival.

The big group behind Lauren shifted slowly. Lauren quickly turned around to see what it was, but before she saw what it was, she heard a loud scream from inside the group. She was frozen with fear. She tried to push her way out of the group, but it failed. The group was crowding in on her. The scream contained, as loud and shrill as ever.

Sam knew where the scream was coming from, but he didn’t want to cause a distraction to anyone. He looked around curiously, but saw no one.

All of a sudden the scream stopped. The crowd around him started to move apart. In the middle, there was a woman, dead. He could see her eyes glazing with fear. Sam was terrified, and angry at this, how could this happen? Why were they doing this? Sam heard someones voice.

“We have to get away from here. Its the only way. These-things are going to kill us all if we wait no longer”

“Where did it go?”

The people were getting scared, terrified even. The whole group was looking around for where the killer went, but the only light they could see was the fire, still burning in the distance.

Sam edged his way though the group. Everyone was pushing and shoving. He finally got away from the group and he ran into a girl. The girl seemed to want to be getting out of the group as well. She looked as pale as a ghost and he face was covered in sweat.

“ Your running too?” Lauren mumbled, he voice cracking with fear.

“Where is there to go?” Sam replied.

The group began to scatter. Sam and Lauren looked at each other.

“ Head east, towards that water.”
Sam said.

Lauren and Sam barley escaped from the group when they heard another scream, followed by a gun shot. The crowd scattered and they ran. Sam and Lauren heard another gun shot, followed by another, and another.

“Its dead!”
A person from the crowd cried.

Sam and Lauren stopped next to an Ocean. They crouched next to a tree and listened for sounds. They listened and listened. When they heard footsteps they tried to be extra quiet. The footsteps stopped and came into the clearing.

“What are we supposed to do?”
Said one of the voices. Lauren leaned out of the bush and in the darkness saw a woman with short curly hair.

“ We have to get out of here, they blew up the clearing. Everyone is dead, we are the only survivors”

Said an greying haired man.

“What are we supposed to do then? We have to get away from here.”
Replied the woman.

Sam was listening as much as he could. He looked out at the water and saw something that looked like a raft. He squinted, it looked like land. Lauren gave him a look and pointed her finger to the ocean.

“Theres an island there we might be able to locate s-somewhere safe. We have to talk to them.

Lauren and Sam went into the clearing. The group looked startled, but then got calm again.

“W-we all kn-know that we need to get away from here”
Lauren said
“ The question is how? Theres an island over there, we saw it before this happened. We just don’t remember. I know its a long way but we have to swim. If we stay here the insanes will kill us. “

The group nodded their heads and looked at the black, glassy water. Lauren dipped her toes in. The water was fairly cold, but not freezing. She could swim. She figured she would last. Sam seemed to be adjusting fairly easily, he quickly started doing a front crawl sprint. He stopped.

“Hurry, we need to get into the water, they will hear the noise and find us!!”

The group began to swim. Lauren lost track of the time she had been swimming. She was numb with pain. When she lifted her head out of the water, she saw lights. She looked up and saw a boat of the insanes smiling at her.

Lauren didn’t looked back and continued swimming away. They made gunshots into the water and began throwing knifes. Lauren just swam as much as she could. She heard a familiar voice.

“HIDE” Underneath the boat! We can all tip it over and drown them!”
Sam cried at everyone.

The group began sprinting towards the back of the boat. Making the insanes confused, Sam plunged his head underwater and pushed the boat over. The rest of the group aided in pushing it over. The insanes were struggling in the water. They didn’t know how to swim. Sam pulled the boat away and ushered everyone on the boat pushing them up, until he got up himself. They used the ors to push the insanes underwater, one by one.

They all started rowing and rowing until the shore got closer. It had been 2 days and everyone was weak and tired, but it was pitched black. When they arrived Lauren stumbled onto the sand, weak and tired. Sam followed after and everyone came onto the sand. Gasping for air, they all lay down. Lauren noticed that in the distance the fire was still blazing and their old home seemed to get smaller and smaller. She blinked a tear away, and then closed her eyes to get some sleep.

All of a sudden, Lauren heard a pounding noise. She sat up quickly and looked behind her. She saw Sam standing over her, with something behind his back. She stuttered

“S-sam, whats wrong?”

Sam’s face was chalk white. Lauren shifted her head. She saw an Insane standing behind Sam and whispering something into his ear. She couldn't scream. She was frozen. She noticed what was behind his back and she couldn't believe it.

“S-S-sam you don’t h-have to d-do this-s”
She stuttered

Sam looked at her and aimed the gun at her. She could feel her heart pounding in her chest. Sam looked at Lauren's sad, begging eyes and pulled the trigger.

The Perks Of Being A Wallflower Review

I have to admit, I was dying to see this movie the day it came out. There was something that attracted me to it, the 3 strong leading roles, the imperfect perfect story, the amazing development of the characters. Also the fact that the book was so highly appraised.

I ended up seeing the movie a week later with huge fans of the books. This movie is about a depressed teenager who meets 2 seinors that welcome him into their world. Its an amazing story of love, friendship and being true to yourself.

I really enjoyed the cinematography in this movie. The shots were very visually appealing and the lighting really conveyed the emoition of the show-bittersweet. I have to warn you, this isent just a story of friendship, its not all happy. But thats what makes it different from the other movies.

The acting was increadible. All the characters had such a great devolopment, and Logan Lerman blew me away with his acting of the main character, something better than his Percy Jackson days. Emma Watson was such a great Sam, and I coulden't imagine anyone else to play that role. Ezra Miller was so great in his role as Paterick. He conveyed it with so music emoition.

The part of this movie that I most enjoyed was its realism. Friendship isen't all happy, there are always rough points in it. Lots of movies fail to convey life from the perspective of the wallflower. This movie shows that life isen't clean. There are some really bad things that happen in life and you have to stand up and be the better person to get out of a rough time. It also shows how much friends and having people can help you. Flawless. A

Pitch Perfect Review

Pitch Perfect just sort of showed up. All of a sudden I saw the trailer on tv, ads and everything promoting it everywhere. I didn't even know what it was before it was out. All I knew is I had to see it. Pitch Perfect completely lived up to my expectations.

Pitch Perfect is about a girl named Beca who arrives in College, one problem: she doesn't even want to be there. She would rather be mixing tracks in hollywood. One day she gets caught singing by the Bella's and they insist she try out for the Bella's a group of singers that don't use instruments, just their mouths to sing.

I think what I enjoyed most about the movie was the character development. I think every character was a really good character. I especially loved Rebel Wilson's character, fat Amy. She was the character that gave the film its soul, because of her hilarious and one of a kind personality. 99.9 % of my laughing came from something her character did or said.

The music was really well done in this movie. Every song that they performed in this movie was very well covered by the Bella's and I was impressed, very impressed by their final performance. I think they mixed the tracks perfectly together.

In conclusion, Pitch Perfect was a wonderful, hilarious, and soulful movie. I would recommend it to anyone!!! A-
